Ambition, confidence, and hustle!
I did not have any of these traits twenty years ago. Running my own business wasn’t even on the radar. With a new master’s degree in accounting, I was looking to get my CPA and land a career with a Big 5 accounting firm, spend 30 years working my way up the ladder, and retire at 65 with a good pension.
I had several accountings jobs and nothing brought me closer to what I thought were my goals.
When I turned 40, I felt depressed and disillusioned.
Around that time, a good friend mentioned how he made some extra money preparing taxes. He suggested I check it out. “What? Taxes? The stepchild of accounting!” I was still planning on getting my CPA credentials, but I was desperate to leave my current employer. However, at the time it sounded like a lot of money for just three and a half months of work. Little did I know it was just the beginning and there was a lot more money to be made. Ambition set in!
Now, it wasn’t all roses and caviar.
If you have ever owned your own business, you know that those first years are the toughest. If you had a family when you were starting out, you questioned yourself daily. But eventually the No’s turn to Yes and you start to grow. Confidence sets in!
Some people were born knowing how to hustle. I wasn’t one of them. But when your back is against the wall you have two options. The second one was not an option for me. I had to learn how to sell myself. So, every chance I had, people heard my 30 second pitch. It got easier every time. The hustlekicks in!
New Mindset- “The harder you work, the luckier you ARE!”
The road to success is full of hills and valleys, but if you continue to believe in yourself, the valleys get smaller and the peaks get higher.
I truly enjoy the work I do now.
Helping people resolve their tax issues can be very rewarding. Not only financially, but in the knowledge that you helped someone get their financial lives back on track. I feel confident saying that I have probably saved a few marriages along the way.
Now I dedicate myself to helping other EA’s who are starting out and wanting to do the same.
